The Best Heroines and Villainesses
Andrea Rubenstein asked members of our forums who some of the best heroines and villainesses are. She said:
For me, one of my all-time favorite heroines is Jade from Beyond Good and Evil. An obvious choice, I know! But she was a kickass woman of color who wasn’t sexualized, wasn’t a damsel in distress, and who joined a rebellion in order to save her planet. Epic.
I’m also partial to Alexandra Rovias from Eternal Darkness, but I’m less sure that it has to do with her character and more that it was a game that I loved that also had a female protagonist.
Here’s what some other people had to say:
Alis from Phantasy Star. Like most 8-bit RPG protagonists she doesn’t have much of a personality, but at least she’s a strong woman who isn’t sexualized at all.
I didn’t get very far in KOTOR but I remember Bastila and Mission Vao being pretty cool.

Other suggestions for heroines included Commander Shepherd, Jill Valentine, Samus Aran and Ashe. Maleficent and Kreia made the list as villainesses.

Foam Weapons and Ray Guns, FTW!
Capes and Consoles wasn’t the only dress-up party at WisCon this year. KC Kupperman, Robyn Fleming and Karen Healey also wore costumes to the annual Fancy Dress Party, garbing themselves in the style of characters from Under the Moons of Riadorf (warning: don’t read it unless you find euphemism-heavy sex scenes hilarious). Jed Hartman was kind enough to take this photo of the women sporting their sci-fi-romance gowns and weapons:
